KING SOOPERS RELOADABLE GIFT CARDS

We are so thankful that so many of you have requested and are using your Centennial Elementary PTO King Soopers Reloadable Gift Cards!  If you are a regular King Soopers shopper, you need to make sure that you have this special card linked to our school.  This card is different from, but can easily be used in conjunction with, the King Soopers savings card provided by the store.  It is a FREE gift from the PTO that comes preloaded with $2.50 just to get you started.  All we ask is that you use it every time you shop at King Soopers to purchase groceries and/or gas.  The process to use it is very easy, and, for every purchase made using the card, our school receives 5% back!  This is adding up to a great deal of money coming back to our school, over $2,100 so far this year, simply by Husky families shopping as they normally do.  Our goal is to receive at least $2,500 back from King Soopers this school year, and we need your help to get there.  If you need more information or you need to get your hands on one of these cards, please stop by the office or email us at cnelpto@gmail.com.  Thank you for supporting our school through this easy free money program!

Save the Date:  Family Fun Night 2017

With May in the not-so-distant future, plans are being made for our traditional year-end celebration, Family Fun Night!  This year the event will be held on Friday, May 4th, from 6-8 p.m.  This year’s carnival will include many of the favorite foods and activities that our families have grown to love over the years.  More information will be heading your way about the event, but we wanted to give you a heads up now so that you can make plans to attend this fun family experience!

At this time, are asking that you please consider supporting Family Fun Night in one or both of the following ways:

  • Donations – Do you have a connection to a business or do you own a business (home-based or otherwise) that you would like to promote at Family Fun Night? The PTO is seeking out donations of products, services, and/or gift cards from various businesses that would like to be included in the evening’s special prize drawings. As a perk, all donations made are tax-deductible, and it is a great, easy way to showcase a business to our Husky families.  We are kindly asking that all donations be turned in to the PTO by Friday, April 20th.  Please contact us at cnelpto@gmail.com with any questions, ideas, and/or donations that you might have.
  • Volunteering Time – Whether it is serving food, running a game, or overseeing an activity, we will need plenty of “hands on deck” to help make Family Fun Night happen. If you can spare some of your time to bring a smile to the faces of your fellow Husky families, we would love to have you join us as a volunteer.  Your efforts will also be rewarded with an entry into special “volunteer only” drawings for every shift you serve that night.  Be on the lookout for online sign ups so that you can take advantage of this fun way to serve and also possibly win a great prize!

Thank you to everyone who provided food for the staff meals and fulfilled teacher wishes during Parent Teacher Conferences in February!  All of your donations were greatly enjoyed and appreciated!

Upcoming PTO Meetings: “Grants in Action” and PTO Board Election

Last month, we kicked off our “Grants in Action” speaker series.  We are excited to continue to have several of Centennial’s very own amazing teachers and staff members serve as our guest presenters during the next three PTO Meetings.  In March, we are thrilled to have one of our first-grade teachers, Mrs. Ernst, share the positive impact that PTO grant money is having on her classroom and students.  Throughout this series, we invite you to come and support these incredible professionals as they share a taste of all of the great teaching and learning going on at our school.

Additionally, if you have an interest in possibly serving on the PTO Board for the 2018-2019 school year, our March meeting is the perfect time to get the inside scoop on what these roles entail and ask any questions that you might have about serving in this capacity.  The election to fill available positions on the board will take place in May.

As a reminder, our general meetings now take place in the Innovation Lab, and free childcare is provided for ages 3 and up in the library.  We start at 6:30 p.m. and strive to keep our meetings only an hour in length.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Staff Grants and Flexible Seating Investments:  Your Money at Work

As part of our commitment to provide our teachers and staff with the best resources possible to meet the educational, social, and emotional needs of our students, this year the PTO has awarded $2,000 in staff grants.  We are excited to see all of these wonderful resources put into use at Centennial Elementary.  We are also looking forward to having all of this year’s grant recipients present at our upcoming PTO meetings to share how this grant money is making a positive impact on our students and school.

Congratulations to the following PTO grant recipients:

  • Digsby and Ms. Ridgley – Materials and storage for literacy and fine motor skills activities
  • Smallwood – Updated articulation materials
  • Wroblewski – Social skills materials, educational supplies and tools for focus and control, and high-end pencil grips
  • Ernst – Classroom books and academic learning center resources
  • Richard – 4 “We Read Phonics” Book Sets
  • Gallagher – Sets of chapter books
  • Tucker – Books for classroom library
  • First Grade Team – 120 Board Pocket Charts*

* Thank you to Applied Coatings Technologies for providing additional funding to support this grant request.

Additionally, thanks to the overwhelming support of our McDonald’s Spirit Night in the fall, we are able to dedicate $700 in funds toward flexible seating options at Centennial.  Along with the special education department, several of the “specials” teachers, who impact all of the students on our campus, will be receiving requested flexible seating options to help enhance their learning environments.  We are excited to see all of these great resources put into use at Centennial and plan to continue to financially support making flexible seating options available on our campus.

February PTO Meeting

Our next general PTO meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 6th at 6:30 p.m.  In addition to discussing PTO business topics, we are also excited to kick off our “Grants in Action” guest speaker series by featuring three of our own wonderful Centennial Elementary teachers – Mrs. Digsby, Ms. Ridgley, and Mrs. Smallwood.

Remember that free childcare is available during all of our meetings.  PLEASE NOTE:  To better accommodate everyone’s needs, the general meetings will now take place in Mrs. Murphy’s Innovation Lab (Room 306 in the blue pod), and childcare will take place in the library.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Looking Ahead . . .

Please note that due to a scheduling conflict with the previously communicated date, the March PTO Meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 6th.  On top of hearing from more of our PTO grant recipients at that meeting, we will also set aside time to share information about various roles on the PTO board that will need to be filled at the conclusion of this school year.  We hope that you will make plans to not only hear our wonderful teachers speak, but you will also come to learn about how you can make a positive impact at Centennial by becoming part of the PTO board for the 2018-2019 school year.

Husky Spirit Wear Round 2

To help us show off our Husky pride and to catch anyone who was unable to purchase spirit wear in the fall, order forms will be heading your way soon.  If you want to take advantage of this year’s final spirit wear sale, please remember to return your form to school by Friday, March 2nd.

Parent-Teacher Conference Meals

One of the biggest thanks we consistently receive from the Centennial staff is when our PTO families provide meals for them during Parent-Teacher Conferences.  While the online sign-up for the upcoming conference meals is filling up, we still have some areas where we could use your help.  If you have not already done so, please consider signing up to bring something to help compliment the dinners and breakfast provided for the faculty during these designated days.  Most items are easy to pick up at the grocery store and don’t require a lot of time, money, or energy on your part.  These food donations do, however, make a world of difference in letting our staff know how much we appreciate everything they do for our kids on a daily basis.  To sign up to bring something for the February conferences (February 12, 13, and 15), please check out the following link – https://tinyurl.com/TeacherConferenceMeals.

Teacher Wishes

Many school personnel at Centennial and all around the world spend a great deal of their own money on classroom supplies that benefit their students.  Often they do it out of necessity, but also because they love what they do, and they want the very best for the children whose lives they impact every day.  During Parent-Teacher Conferences, the PTO has asked all of the Husky staff members to provide parents and families with ideas about what kinds of things they need and/or wish they had for their classrooms.  These wishes will be posted on large wish boards that will be placed in the main entrance to the school.  As you are visiting the school during conferences, please consider helping to fulfill the simple wishes of your child(ren)’s teacher(s).  Small investments in things like disinfecting wipes, clipboards, markers, books, etc. can be a huge help for our teachers and staff.  Thank you for considering their requests!

Ongoing Fundraising Opportunities:

Thank you to everyone who supported our spirit event at Chick-fil-A in Longmont! We had an incredible turnout, and we look forward to letting you know about our final earnings!

If one of your New Year’s Resolutions is to get more involved at Centennial Elementary, then learning about and getting plugged in with the PTO is a great way to start your year off on the right foot! One way to do this is to attend our monthly meetings.

Our next meeting is coming up on Tuesday, January 9th, at 6:30 p.m. in the library. In addition to discussing items directly related to PTO, we are fortunate to have a guest speaker from Grassroots St. Vrain coming to share some important information about how public schools are funded. Grassroots St. Vrain is a parent-operated non-profit organization whose vision is a St. Vrain Valley community that is informed about education funding in Colorado and empowered to take action for the benefit of our schools.

It is our goal to keep our meetings only an hour in length and, as always, free childcare will be provided for children ages 3 and up. So, grab a friend and join us! We look forward to seeing you there!

Donation Request – If you like clearance shopping after the holidays, the PTO needs bows, clothing boxes, gift bags, and other wrapping supplies for next year’s Giving Tree project and staff gifts for students. While it is hard to believe, another round of conferences is just around the corner in February.  “Happy Husky Holidays” Open House – Thank you!

Thanks to all of our amazing volunteers as well as all of our Husky families who participated, the “Happy Husky Holidays” Open House event was a huge success.  We thoroughly enjoyed the musical entertainment provided by our wonderful school choir, the “Husky Howlers”, under the direction of our great music teacher, Ms. Rogers.  We were also thankful for the work of Student Council members, with the guidance of their sponsor, Ms. Valdez, who organized over 700 food items that our generous Husky families brought in during the festivities.  Additionally, we were thrilled to partner with Mrs. Adams and the Mission Possible Kids Organization in providing a special Santa letter writing station.  For each of the 300 letters collected, Macy’s will be donating $2 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation to grant the wishes of critically ill children.  In addition to the delicious cocoa and cookies and holiday crafts, we were also fortunate to hear some special stories shared by our own incredible Centennial staff members.  We greatly appreciate our amazing photographer for the night, Chris Tone, who captured your fun and fancy family photos.  These pictures will be returned to families in Friday Folders prior to the winter break.  Thank you, again, to everyone who played a part in this special kickoff to the holiday season!

Giving Tree Donations & Gift Wrapping

Once again, our Husky families went above and beyond in providing gifts for some of our families who need a little extra assistance this holiday season.  Generous donors claimed all of the tags, and the presents, along with teacher gifts for students, were all wrapped in record time by a special group of volunteers.  We cannot thank everyone enough for your participation in these efforts to provide a magical holiday experience for those who need it most right here at Centennial.

Planning Ahead:  Donation Request

If you like clearance shopping after the holidays, the PTO needs bows, bags, clothing boxes, tape, and other wrapping supplies for next year’s Giving Tree and staff gifts to students.  Many stores will have these items marked 70-90% off, so please keep the PTO in mind as you are stocking up.  We can store them at the school so you can send your donations to the front office at any time.  Thank you for considering this special request!

December PTO Meeting:  Focus on Safety

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, December 12th, at 6:30 p.m. in the library.  As always, free childcare will be available during the meeting for children ages 3 and up.  This month, in addition to our PTO business, we are fortunate to have Stacy Gahagen, the Security Manager for St. Vrain Valley Schools, as our special guest speaker.  We look forward to hearing her speak about the measures that are in place to keep our students safe at school.  This is also a great opportunity for you to ask any questions you have regarding this very important topic.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Staff Favorites – With the holidays rapidly approaching, we just want to remind you that Staff Favorites can be easily found on our PTO web site.  From their favorite colors to their go-to sweet treats and everything else in between, we hope this will serve as a great tool for you to help support, and perhaps, do something special for the incredible people who do so much for our kids every day.  Visit our site at www.ptocentennial.com/our-staff/staff-favorites/

What better way to spend those chilly winter break days than curling up with a good book?  All St. Vrain Valley elementary schools and preschools are invited to participate in the district’s Winter Reading Challenge.  The competition takes places from December 15-January 2.  All you have to do is record the number of minutes read during that timeframe using the myON reader program at http://stvra.in/myon.  Prizes (up to $3,000) will be awarded to the schools with the highest average minutes read per student (total minutes/enrollment.)  All funds will be used to enhance reading programs.  If you have questions about the login information for your child, please contact his/her teacher.  Let’s get reading, Centennial!

Spirit Wear – It has come to our attention that a very small portion of the spirit wear that was distributed this fall has some of the print coming off after typical washing and proper care.  We want to make sure that you are completely satisfied with the clothing you ordered, so we ask that you please let us know (cnelpto@gmail.com) by December 31st if this rare defect has impacted your purchase, and we will do our best to have your shirt(s) replaced as soon as possible.

Upcoming Dates:

  • Winter Box Tops Contest – 12/1-1/31
  • December PTO Meeting – 12/12
  • Chipotle Spirit Night – 12/13
  • myON Reading Challenge – 12/15-1/2
  • January PTO Meeting – 1/9

November Family Paw Print

“Happy Husky Holidays” Open House, Friday, December 1st, 5:30 – 8:00 pm

We are excited to offer a new twist on a FREE favorite family event at Centennial. Much like our previous holiday gatherings, we will provide delicious hot chocolate and cookies, crafts, teacher readings, and a photo opportunity for our Husky families to enjoy. We are also looking forward to partnering with a couple of our student organizations to highlight and support their talents and service. As part of the evening, families are encouraged to help kick off the Student Council Holiday Food Drive by bringing in donations. Additionally, Centennial’s choir, the “Husky Howlers”,  will be leading families in holiday songs throughout the evening. While Santa will not be at this year’s event, children will have the opportunity to write a special letter to the Jolly Old Elf as part of the festivities. We look forward to seeing you there!

We appreciate your support of this event and ask that you consider volunteering some of your time to help make this experience extra special. More information and sign-ups for volunteer opportunities will be heading your way soon!

Giving Tree & Gift Wrapping

In order to help provide a magical holiday experience for some of our Husky families in need of assistance, the PTO is sponsoring a Giving Tree in the library. Ornament tags with gift requests will be located in a box on top of the first bookshelf to the right upon entering the library. When taking the gift tags, donors need to record their information in the logbook found next to the box of tags. These gift requests will be available from Monday, November 13th, until Friday, December 1st. The tags need to be returned, along with the new, unwrapped gifts to the front office by Monday, December 4th. It is our hope that our Husky families will take advantage of this special opportunity to spread some holiday cheer to those who need it the most right here at Centennial.

If you enjoy wrapping gifts, we would love your help between December 4th – 12th to wrap Giving Tree gifts as well as class sets of gifts for our teachers to give to their students. We appreciate any time that you can donate on those days during school hours. Please check in at the front office, and we will put you to work!

PTO Partnership: MPK The PTO is excited to have a new partnership this year with Mission Possible Kids (MPK). Through MPK, several Centennial teachers, staff members, and volunteers are supporting our students in efforts to make a positive impact on the world around them through various service projects. This group is ongoing throughout the school year, and all Centennial students in grades 1-5 are invited to join in at any time. Mission Possible Kids meets two Fridays out of each month, and there is a $30 fee to cover the cost of the shirt and supplies.

To register online, please go to http://stvrain.revtrak.net (Elementary School > A-K > Centennial Elementary > CS Centennial Elementary Child Care and Enrichment > CS Centennial Enrichment Program > Mission Possible Kids).

For more information on helping your child become an “agent of change” with MPK, please contact Lindsay Adams at adams_lindsay@svvsd.org.

Restaurant Spirit Events – Our first two spirit events of the year were incredibly successful! Our school received a check for $408 from Blackjack Pizza, and between the apple pie sales/donations and food sales from our McDonald’s spirit night, Centennial raised over $700! We are SO thankful for your amazing support!

Mark your calendar now for our next two spirit events:

Texas Roadhouse in Longmont Wednesday, November 15th, 4-10 p.m. 15% of sales come back to Centennial!

Chipotle in Longmont Wednesday, December 13th, 4-8 p.m. 50% of sales come back to Centennial!

Box Tops for Education Worth 10 cents each! The fall competition brought in some amazing results from our Husky students. We had two classes that knocked it out of the park this time around – Mrs. Spendlow’s class turned in 821 Box Tops and Mr. Adelman’s class brought in 673 Box Tops!! These amazing totals have earned both classes a special prize for their efforts. So far our school has raised about $900 from this year’s Box Tops collections, and we are just getting started! Please continue clipping and collecting those Box Tops all year long. They really do add up and make a difference!

Longmont Dairy Milk Caps Worth 5 cents each! King Soopers Reloadable Gift Cards For every purchase you make using the card, our school receives 5% back!

Wow! Because of the amazing support for our fall fundraiser, we were able to raise over $24,500 for our school! This exciting total opens up doors for us to support Centennial Elementary at a higher level via staff grant money, field trip transportation, new technology, and so much more. Thank you for all of your efforts to make this fundraiser so successful!

November General PTO Meeting  – Our next PTO General Meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 14th, at 6:30 p.m., in the library. In addition to our regular PTO business, we are fortunate to have one of our very own Centennial teachers, Jane Wroblewski, serve as our special guest speaker. We look forward to hearing her share information about flexible seating and focus tools that are having a positive impact on our Husky students.

As always, free childcare will be available, and we strive to keep our meetings no longer than an hour in length. We hope that you will join us!

Thank you! We greatly appreciate everyone who donated their time and/or delicious food for our staff to enjoy during the week of Fall Conferences! The meals were a huge hit, and it would not have been possible without your wonderful support! Also, a big thank you goes out to all of you who grabbed the teacher wishing stars that were displayed during Fall Conferences. Our teachers were overwhelmed by the amazing response of supply donations for their classrooms.
